Wednesday 14th February We left the scene of the
Bridge over the River Kwai and started to drive on to Lampang. After
an hour or so we stopped to admire a rather special Buddhist temple
at Wat Pa Leylai. |
| Inside was a simply enormous Buddha statue. |
Outside they were even building yet another temple. |
| Thursday 15th February. We didn't get as far as
Lampang but stayed the night at Tak. The next day we set off again
after breakfast and first visited the Bhumibol Dam, Thailand's largest
dam. Built from concrete designed as a huge curve cutting across
Maenam Ping between Khao Kaew and Khao Yanhi. The dam produces most of
Thailand's hydro-electric power and ranks 8th in the world of
hydro-electricity producing dams. |
Here we found a locust sunning himself on the path.
Mike put down a coin so that we could see how big he was. |
| We arrived at Lampang where we were treated to a trip
around the town in a whole fleet of small horse drawn carriages. Two
per carriage. Lampang is the only town in Thailand where horse
carriages are still used as a means of transportation. |
At one point we stopped and all had to get out to
visit a museum that they are setting up of things relating to these
horse drawn carriages |
| Martyn with the lead horse. We had an excellent
lunch before driving on to Chiang Mai where we were to stay for the
next three nights. |
