Part 5 - Toulon, Carcasson &
Escat to Bilbao
Back to Previous Page
We arrived at Toulon about 9.30 in the evening and managed to find
our hotel, which was adequate but nothing special. Then Saturday morning set off to drive
to Carcasson. We should have arrived about 1.30 but unfortunately got tied up in a strike
of the people who collect the money at the peages on the motorways. It took us just over
an hour and a half to get through the peage at Nimes.
We are now in a hotel right in the middle of the ancient city of
Carcasson. This is a fascinating mediaeval city. Pictures follow:

Our Hotel |
Then on Monday we left the hotel and drove out of the mediaeval city of Carcasson to
find the road through to Foix. The home of Pate de Foix Gras. Through Foix we got onto
smaller country roads heading for Escat.

On the way we saw in the distance the snow capped mountains of the
Pyrannes. Behind them is Spain. |
| Early afternoon we arrived at Escat the home of the Horner family who used
to live in South Cerney. They moved here some ten years ago and since then have been
running it not only as their home but also as a holiday school for painters |

| Sophie took us to St. Lizzier, not far away which is another ancient
fortified town. Here we inspected the magnificent old Cathedral |

It was rather dark inside, but worth the visit.

In the afternoon we drove up into the mountains. Our last views before
driving on to Bilbau in Spain for our last night before catching the boat home to
Portsmouth |
