Galway by the first bridge. The one nearest to the sea.
Galway has three bridges. Looking over the third one to the Cathedral
Inside the magnificent Cathedral at Galway
Looking across the fishing harbour at the mouth of the river. Not far from where I was staying
A harbour a little further north round the coast
To the north of Galway is the beautiful Lough Corrib. This flows down through Galway, under its three bridges to the sea. This was taken at the northern end of the lough
The Arran islands lie just off the coast a little way to the north of Galway. I took a boat to the largest of the islands and found an ancient fort situated right on the edge of high cliffs

A very beautiful place. Kylemore Abbey. Built by a rich man who came here on his honeymoon, fell in love with the place and built it for his new wife. They then went on holiday to Italy where she died. He returned a broken man and took to drink. Eventually he was forced to sell the place.

In the first world war a group of Nuns from Belgium were evacuated to London. Later they found this place and bought it. It is now a rather exclusive school run by the Nuns.

When he built Kylemore Abbey he also built this Gothic style Church in the grounds
and all alongside the Abbey is this amazing Victorian walled garden
Leenaun
Westport
Knock is the Irish equivalent to Lourdes in France. Here some local girls had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary, surrounded by three apostles. In the next few years there were some miraculous healings and a Basilica, visitors centre and shrine were built for the many pilgrims that come here
The shrine built over the place of the vision has an artist's impression of the vision on the end wall
Rathfran Abbey now derelict
I think you could call this an Irish Traffic Jam
Newport
Between Westport and Leenaun

Now coming down south of Galway, the Cliffs of Moher which are claimed to be the highest cliffs in Europe
The cliffs of Moher as seen from a little boat that sets off from the tiny Doolin harbour
Kilrush from my bedroom window
My last night in Ireland. I stayed at this delightful hotel at Tyrrells Pass
